They Died for King Coal
Published in Paperback by Jalamap Pubns Inc (June, 1983)
Average review score:

Good reference to coal mining disasters. This book is an accurate accounting of the lives lost by coal miners in the line of duty. One of the particular incidents in the book refers to my Grandfather who died as a foreman in the Pursglove mine. He was presented the Carnegy Metal for his attempt to save other trapped miners. This book is a good reference, but it could have a little more details to be an excellent book. Mr. Lacy Dillon also wrote another book "They died in the Darkness" which covers other disasters not in this one. Another of his books, "I'll Remember You in the Morning", a fictional writting is very good to give the reader the feeling of the times when these disasters took place.

A Molly Maguire Story
Published in Paperback by Templecrone Pr (May, 1991)

Read with CareThis book may be of interest to residents of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania and those interested in the Molly Maguires and the history of Irish immigration in general. However, it is necessary to take the book with a large grain of salt. It suffers for want of professional editing, and there are many factual errors. For general historical background on the history of the Molly Maguires, there are better sources available.
Great Book For Molly LoversI ahve never seen a better book about Irish home cooking. All the potato recipes are great and the tips for making "Easy Hibernian Hash" with porter and aged cabbage are fantastic. Some of my other favorite Irish recipes are Tamaqua Toast, Mock Chunky Campbell's Soup and Kerrigan's Squeal. Oh yeah, watch out for "Morgan Powell's Killer Cocktail," it's a drink you won't forget. The jury has rendered its verdict, this book is a winner!!
A Molly maguire storyThe main point ,this book told ,was how the state of penna.,walk away from their reasonably to run the trial of these men,and turn it over to a corporation [Reading Railroad] to run these trials. With there own judge,,a hand pick jury ,and a execution date.let not forget this.to be Irish in the 1800's,and a union man, meant your guilt, over making money.

The Molly Maguires
Published in Paperback by International Publishers Co (June, 1970)

Justification for TerrorismThe author, Anthony Bimba, was a well known Communist "intellectual" and agitator who wrote this book in the 1930s to gain sympathy for the radical left labor movement. It's interesting to see a glimpse here of historical collaboration between radical Irish nationalists and Marxists. During the past year we've seen the IRA get caught sending "consultants" to Columbia to help train Marxist rebels build bombs there; in this book, we see an instance of the self-serving support that Communists in the U.S. have given to Irish immigrants engaged in terrorism for political ends. Most Irish-Americans today are completely oblivious to this symbiosis. This book is propaganda with the gloss of "history."
Whitewashing the TerroristsThis book presents the Molly Maguires in a left-wing fairy tale. You won't often see such biased, one-sided fantasy passing itself off as history. This book perpetuates the myth that the Molly Maguire terror squad were just well-meaning choir boys trying to build support for a union. Somehow, in Bimba's version, all the murders and mayhem get left out.
This book was written over 75 years ago when the anarchists and Communists still thought they had a chance to get a foot in the door through American labor unions. Times have changed and this kind of propaganda doesn't work any more. It's time to put this book out of its misery and let it go out of print.
A mine owner once said, "Coal is mined with a rifle!"A short but concise history of the militant coal miners dubbed the "Molly Maguires". Robber barrons continually starved, framed, and just plain murdered militant miners in order to crush strikes. The chief agent of the mine operators is Pinkertons number one labor spy McParland. Famous for his quickly obtained and case clinching confessions. He pops up from time to time in labor history. Most notably he shows up in 1908 to help kidnap, imprison, and frame Haywood and Moyer leaders of the Western Federation of Miners. Unlike the "Mollies" these men had the support of workers across the globe and they we're vindicated. Yes Bimba was was a member of the Communist Party (this was written in the 1930's heyday of the commies), but his conclusions are extraordinarly non-dogmatic. He analyzes newspaper accounts and examines court documents and procedures to come to a fairly objective conclusion.

Rebels in the Shadows

Ideology Masquerading as a Children's BookThis book is about the highly controversial Molly Maguires and the labor troubles in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. It's written for school-age children. The blurbs on the cover claim this book is historically accurate, and the author claims everything is based on historical records. Yet, at this story's climax, one of the main characters (Red, who is based on the historical figure of detective James McParlan) is depicted as a liar who commits perjury in court to convict an innocent coal miner. There is no historical proof that it happened this way. Yet, it happens to coincide nicely with the conspiracy theories that Molly Maguire apologists have been pushing for years, trying to defend the perpetrators of murder and violence in the anthracite coal fields. In other words, this book misrepresents itself and misleads impressionable young readers with a one-sided and inaccurate version of the Molly Maguires. This book is ideological propaganda masquerading as history. Not Recommended.
Rebels in the ShadowsThis book follows an Irish family mining in the hills of Pennsylvania and their involvement with the Molly Maguires, a secret society fighting-- and killing-- for miners' rights. This is not a book I would have sought out to read, but I'm glad that I happened upon it. I've actually found myself looking around for people like the two strongest male characters-- Captain Mike and Red. And this book does an excellent job of relating the real life troubles and joys of the mining communities that fueled our country's industrial booms. Something is lacking in this book, but its intentions are honorable and the combination of fact and fiction does make it enjoyable to read. I'd give it two and three-quarter stars or a B+.

Correctionon page 66 there is an article written by The Dawson News. In that article it has a list of bodies recovered from the 1923 explosion. But there is one George Makris, my great uncle, that was killed in the 1913 explosion not the 1923 one.

Terrigenous Clastic Depositional Systems: Applications to Petroleum, Coal, and Uranium Exploration
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (March, 1996)
Average review score:

The only textbook I intend to sell backThe lack of organization and lack of a glossary result in a poor textbook. Do not use this as your main source of info when trying to learn about depositional systems- much more understandable books exist.
Too much informationThis is a book packed full of information. Each chapter could be a single book, and that would help, expanding more on the ideas contained within.
